To the question of 'optimism vs pessimism'... i like what Paul Hawken says:
..::"If you actually look at the science about what is happening on Earth and your aren't pessimistic... you don't understand the data... But if you meet the people who are working to restore this Earth and the lives of the poor... and you aren't optimistic... you haven't got a pulse"... http://EcoDelMar.org/paul

Noam Chomsky's video about "Climate Change"... ... i think what Noam is saying... along with his wonderfully lucid history lesson... is that the CEO's of industry are, in effect, locked into a kamikaze mind-set... if they hesitate, slow down, step back to think... or show what others will call fear, they will be replaced... and if they keep going full speed ahead... we all literally risk human extinction... please see: http://ecodelmar.org/NOAA/ and http://ecodelmar.org/phytoplankton

... We appear to be living in a world of "Ego vs Love"... it's the same old story... with updated semantics... repeated over and over since the beginning of time...

... and while every pursuit of happiness, just for the "ego" always ends in great pain...

... every pursuit of happiness for the "common good", always ends in Peace... unless it temporarily stumbles... and there will never be a "reason" good enough to ever give up on Loving One Another...

... how can you tell which road you are on... it's easy... do you walk with Peace in your Heart... or an ego plotting it's next attack in your mind... both are there... the choice is always in the Now... which one shall we exercise today...

... It's like we've all been traveling along life's highways enjoying the beautiful ride... and now... when we double check the road map.... the road ends up ahead...

... we are venturing into un-charted climate territory for all of humanity... on a beautiful planet plentiful "air" for all it's breathing Life ... totally dependent on the health of the "Oceans" for that "air"...

... some say speed up... some say slow down.... some wish to go back... some say it's too late to go back... most of the scientists say we have a really big problem... and ignoring this problem won't make it go away.... slowing down certainly seems to be a logical suggestion... and trying to understand what is causing the problem....

... many of the "corporations" still want to go full speed ahead because that always worked in the past... i think enough of us now know that was never a very wise option... and in fact, that option gave more power to the corporations.... and the governments are apparently more devoted to the corporations than the people... so who can we turn to... we all know to Reduce our carbon footprint... to Reuse, Recycle, Refuse unnecessary consumption... and we all try to do whatever we can not to exacerbate the problem...

... Peace is certainly more sustainable than war for as long as we all have "enough"... and there is a lot of disagreement over where to draw that line.... how much is "enough".... and the powerful corporations are willing to send your children to die to get "more"... for them... when will we say "enough is enough"... and now that we know that the old consumerism paradigm is actually dangerous for Life on Earth.... is there an organization that is Peacefully saying "enough is enough"....

... is it too late... nobody really knows... do you want to help... that's like asking do you want to take your next breath... of course you do.... it's innate within every Living cell to want to Live... and we all want to enjoy Life... and share the Joy of being alive... we all want to "belong" here... we don't want war and hate... we all innately want to live happily in Peace... and to share with one another...

... so i will "share" a link to some suggestions that you are welcome to share... or not... it's up to you... i do not try to tell you what to do, that's not the way of Peace.... your inner choice is the way of the future.... there is a beautiful "Heart" in every one of us and all the answers are already there... they always were...

... now i know there are some semantics involved here, but let's put the semantics aside so we can communicate... we don't need to ask anyone for the answer because they might answer with "words" or even "advertisements" that are not actually true for you.... and the "messages" that comes from your own Heart is True for you... and for all of us... we feel a calm Peace when we do Listen to Our Heart... and that is the way we Know... sustainable Peace...

... i am not trying to make a play on words...

... and now i will share a link to 311 pages of suggestions that you are welcome to share... or not...

Ocean Acidification is now unstoppable... a year ago NOAA said it would take about 100 years for the Ocean's pH to re-balance... now they say it will take tens of thousands of years... and no one knows to what extent Ocean Acidification will effect the phytoplankton... and if we do loose the phytoplankton... can we come up with an alternative oxygen source soon enough... when CO2 concentrations get too high, trees stop functioning ... and if forests will fail... crops will fail... the methane hydrates will vaporize and burn out of control... still half the American voters say none of this is real...

PHYTOPLANKTON are some of the most important life-forms on our planet, and are key for the survival of all marine Life, and land Life. They provide most of the OXYGEN we breathe (and are more valuable than any land-based plant life), and are responsible for the majority of photosynthesis on our planet, which has the added bonus of filtering out the majority of CO2 in our atmosphere. NEWS: The Ocean CO2 Eco-Cycle

Global Warming Is Reducing Ocean Life....
While Increasing Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide

"Phytoplankton grow faster in a cool ocean and slower in a warm one," said Siegel. "The scary part is that the oceans are warming now ---- caused by our emissions of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide."

These microscopic plants are predicted to grow even slower in the warmer oceans of the future. This in turn will reduce the food available to fish and other organisms, including marine birds and mammals, which are supported by the ocean's food chain. Phytoplankton are responsible for about the same amount of photosynthesis each year as all the plants on land combined.

Another disturbing result of reduced phytoplankton is that our atmosphere depends on the consumption of atmospheric carbon dioxide by these plants. Reduced phytoplankton means less carbon dioxide is taken up by the ocean, which could speed global warming, contributing to a vicious cycle of increased warming.

"Rising levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere play a big part in global warming," said lead author Michael Behrenfeld of Oregon State University. "This study shows that as the climate warms, phytoplankton growth rates go down and along with them the amount of carbon dioxide these ocean plants consume. That allows carbon dioxide to accumulate more rapidly in the atmosphere, which would produce more warming."

Medicine from Coral Reefs:
(AZT) azidothymidine, a drug widely used to treat people with AIDS.

The life saving medication, AZT was created from a chemical found in the Caribbean Sea coral reefs, Gorgonian, a type of soft coral commonly referred to as type of sea sponge. Although coral reefs are in the process of dying worldwide, it still unknown how many life saving medicines, derived from coral reefs could have been discovered before the reefs are lost forever. An aquatic organism, called bryozoan Bugula neritina, yields a compound currently being tested in the fight against cancer. Caribbean gorgonian (a soft coral) produces a group of compounds with anti-inflammatory properties.

Acidifying the ocean is particularly detrimental to the Living organisms that secrete shell material made of CaCO3, such as coral reefs and a type of phytoplankton called coccolithophorids [Kleypas et al., 1999]. The ocean pH change will persist for thousands of years. Because the fossil fuel CO2 rise is faster than natural CO2 increases in the past, the ocean will be acidified to a much greater extent than has occurred naturally in at least the past 800,000 years [Caldeira and Wicket, 2003].

Phytoplankton
and Zooplankton

Changes in the carbonate chemistry of the ocean may have a strong negative impact on many phytoplankton and zooplankton species that form the base of the marine food chain.

In almost all calcifying organisms tested, ranging from single-celled organisms up to reef building corals, there is a decrease in the ability of the organism to produce calcium carbonate in more acidic waters (6). One study has documented the changes in two species of coccolithophores grown under conditions expected by the end of this century, where both species show significant decreases (25 - 45%) in calcification rates and clear signs of structural damage in their shells, which may affect their physical functioning and reproduction. However, not all species of calcifying organisms are negatively affected by increased acidity, and more research is needed to understand these mechanisms and possible adaptation pathways(7).

The first two photos on the left show scanning electron microscopy photographs of the calcifying phytoplankton Gephyrocapsa oceanica under CO2 conditions of today (top) and under the high CO2 conditions expected by the end of this century (middle).
Pteropods are small "winged snails" that form the basis of the food chain for many commercial fish species. A recent study has observed shell dissolution in living pteropods when exposed to the carbonate content of the ocean expected in the next 50 years in the high latitudes (6).

If ocean acidification leads to disturbances in the populations of these organisms, other non-calcifying organisms may out-compete them for food and nutrients, leading to a change in the ecosystem composition of the system. Although some of the affected organisms are important prey for higher organisms, it is not yet clear how such changes would affect the entire ecosystem.

Our Geo-Engineering "Climate Fix"... That Poisons Ocean Life...
Fertilising the oceans with iron to absorb carbon dioxide could increase concentrations of a chemical that can kill marine mammals, a study has found.

(From BBC News / by Richard Black) -- Iron stimulates growth of marine algae that absorb CO2 from the air, and has been touted as a "climate fix".

Now researchers have shown that the algae increase production of a nerve poison that can kill mammals and birds.

Writing in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, they say this raises "serious concern" over the idea.

What is Killing the Phytoplankton...

A chemical culprit responsible for the rapid, mysterious death of phytoplankton in the North Atlantic Ocean has been found by collaborating scientists at Rutgers University and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI).

"The "lipids" (oils) themselves can cause death just like a virus," says Van Mooy. "We can cause the phytoplankton to die by just giving the lipids." ... and this newly found lipid (oil)... deals it's toxic twist of fate by causing the upper-ocean plants to commit cellular "suicide"... There is also a potential connection with cancer.

"It appears that the virus has "borrowed", (copied actually), the genes for this lipid (oil) from the host," he says. "Similar genes are still on the host, but the virus has figured out a way to take those genes and put them into its own genome, and alter them enough to make them more toxic."

Van Mooy sees it as a struggle between two mighty forces. "The phytoplankton are at one end of the boxing ring and they're taking up carbon dioxide, and the viruses are at the other end, and they're out to kill them. And how that works out controls how much carbon dioxide is taken up.

If viruses are killing off phytoplankton, this can increase greenhouse emissions, Van Mooy suggests. "That's important because if viruses infect a whole bunch of cells, then they can't perform photosynthesis, they can't take up carbon dioxide."

Van Mooy said: "There are probably more out there. And who knows what kind of activities they may be involved with. They may hold a cure for a human disease or they may play unknown vital role in ...... "phytoplankton"....

USF Ocean Researcher say even the oil droplets kill phytoplankton
One BP OIL head sealed, while gushers of uncertainty remains...
September 19, 2010|By Richard Fausset, Los Angeles Times

Kendra Daly, an ocean researcher at the University of South Florida, said even the droplets could kill many plankton, a crucial component of the ocean food chain, possibly creating a cascade effect that could reduce the populations of other, larger species. Already researchers have found some evidence of oil harming plankton in an important spawning area of the Gulf.

Susan Shaw, a marine toxicologist and director of the Marine Environmental Research Institute in Blue Hill, Maine, is among those concerned that the combination of the oil and dispersant is "more toxic than either alone" because the dispersants break down the lipid membranes of cells, allowing oil to enter organs more easily, she said.

What is killing the phytoplankton...

The Vital Link Between the Ocean's Health and Human Health...

http://EcoDelmar.org/pcb :: this video is about dolphins and whales.... and the PCBs known to be circulating in Earth's Oceans and biosphere...

... here is my question...

The "abstract" below is related to several "safer" replacements for PCBs...

...while the text of the abstract states the toxicity is "less" when compared to PCBs... yet the "quantity" of (10 to 56 ug/L) is extremely low...

ug/L = PPB = part per Billion

mg/L = PPM = parts per Million

.... if these "safer" replacement chemicals are considered "toxic" at such extremely low trace levels... and the newer chemicals are "stated to be" less toxic than PCBs... when realizing that dolphins and whales are now testing at well over 1,000 PPM .... Houston, we have a problem.... because industry has already dumped tons of PCBs into rivers that obviously drain into our Oceans... what may not be so obvious to these industrial mavericks is that dumping their toxic pesticides and herbicides into the Ocean is killing the vital phytoplankton that produce most of the oxygen on Earth...

... if these new and supposedly "safer" replacement chemicals are toxic to algae at such low trace levels.... what about the toxic effect of the much higher levels of PCBs in the Oceans now, that could certainly be linked to the 40% loss of phytoplankton happening throughout the Oceans today...

please see: http://ecodelmar.org/phytoplankton

----------------------
ABSTRACT:
----------------------

Laboratory studies were conducted to determine the acute or chronic toxicity of seven potential polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) replacement products (six phosphate esters and one water-glycol mixture) to the alga Selenastrum capricornutum and three species of invertebrates. Significant reductions in algal biomass after 14 d of incubation were measured in tests with five phosphate esters at nominal concentrations ranging from 0.10 to 10 mg/L. The acute toxicity of six phosphate esters tested against a daphnid (Daphnia magna), a midge (Chironomus plumosus) and an amphipod (Gammarus pseudolimnaeus) was moderate, ranging from 1.1 to 18.0 mg/L. The water-gylcol mixture was nontoxic to algae and invertebrates at the highest nominal concentration tested (100 mg/L).

Chronic toxicity tests based on nominal concentrations indicated that five of the six phosphate esters tested against daphnids reduced survival and reproduction at concentrations ranging from 10 to 56 ug/L. whereas only one of three tested against amphipods significantly reduced growth and survival at concentrations of 31 to 128 ug/L. Emergence of midges exposed to three phosphate esters for 30 d was significantly reduced at concentrations of 36 to 319 ug/L. The water-glycol mixture tested was much less toxic to algae and invertebrates than were the phosphate esters. These data indicate that the potential hazard of phosphate esters to the environment is significantly less than that of PCBs.

Our Oceans Need more help... and less hurt...

Our Oceans gave us everything... what did we give back...

The drawdown of both carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrate per mole of phosphate and the rate of new production by diatoms are much lower than that measured for P. antarctica. Consequently, the capacity of the biological community to draw down atmospheric CO2 and transport it to the deep ocean could diminish dramatically if predicted increases in upper ocean stratiÞcation due to climate warming should occur.

* A 1,000-km northward shift of warmer-water plankton, with a similar retreat of colder-water plankton, has been observed in the north-east Atlantic over the past 50 years, as the seas around the UK have become warmer.

* In the North Sea, the population of the previously dominant and important cold-water zooplankton species Calanus finmarchicus has declined in biomass by 70% since the 1960s.

* The seasonal timing of plankton production has altered in response to recent climate changes. Some species are occurring up to four to six weeks earlier than 20 years ago, affecting predators, including fish.

Continued increase in sea temperature, due to climate change and associated changes such as ocean acidification, are likely to exert major influences on plankton abundance and geographical distributions, with implications for primary production and climate control.

Phytoplankton has reduced by 40% since 1950...

"Over half of the world's OXYGEN is produced by these phytoplankton," explained Professor David Thomas, from the school of ocean sciences at the University of Bangor. "If you took that away you would lose the basis of life on the globe. There simply wouldn't be enough oxygen to support life." Professor Thomas said: "If you go back far enough in time, life started in the plankton, so we owe it a remarkable debt." telegraph.co.uk View Global Phytoplankton via NASA's Aqua satellite

Louie Psihoyos, photojournalist of "The Cove"... and Miyoko Sakashita ... Oceans Director and Senior Attorney, for the Center of Biological Diversity... discuss the impacts of Ocean Acidification on Earth...

Miyoko Sakashita is on a mission for the Earth's imperiled marine life... and to protect Earth's ECO-Systems from the impending threats of Ocean Acidification...

"quoted from: Jon Harrington :: "Corporate America must change... The cost to the environment and our survival is too great to allow the lobbyists in Washington to "run" our government. Over the past 18 months the petroleum industry has spent... $1,800.00 per day, per congressman, in lobbying expenses. If renewable energy had that kind of money for influence, imagine where we would be...

It was great to have Miyoko on the program this week, as the Center of Biological Diversity is at the forefront of changing policy in Washington.

While most people think farm runoff and sewage are the biggest Ocean problem...

infinitely more detrimental to Life on Earth are the non-biodegradable POPS that are sent from industry to the underground city pipeline systems that many are totally un-aware of... these are highly toxic non-bio-degradable POPS like: PBDEs and PCBs that will continue diffusing cancerous toxic molecules throughout the environment far longer than any bio-degradables... Then to realize the mega tons of plastic will continue to photo-degrade for 400 to 800 years (not bio-degrading) and transport toxic PCBs into the Ocean's food chain for centuries. see: http://ecodelmar.org/pcb

Connecting the plastic ECO dots . . . .
------------------------------------------
Why we must keep plastic out of the Oceans....

I made this rudimentary "flash" video in 2006, attempting to give a "brief" visual synopsis that anyone can understand... describing the ecological scenario unfolding 24/7 in our Oceans, worldwide, underscoring the importance of NOT dumping plastic and toxic industrial chemicals into the only living Oceans in the entire universe. FACTS:

* With every tick of every second 310 Kg of toxic chemicals are released into our air, land, rivers and oceans by industrial profiteers worldwide.

* This amounts to 10 Million Tons (over 21 billion pounds) of toxic chemicals released into Earth's environment by industries each year.

* Of these, over 2 Million Tons (over 4.5 Billion pounds) per year are known carcinogens. This amounts to 65 Kg each second.

Ironically... none of these are the greatest threat to human survival on Earth... and bio-degradable sewage is the easiest of them all to fix... but if we don't get CO2 under control, we will not survive: http://ecodelmar.org/ocean_acidification ... if we loose the phytoplankton... we loose half the oxygen supply on earth... CO2 will skyrocket with out the phytoplankton... and trees will stop functioning... crops will fail... forests will die, dry, burn, and become deserts... and the mega tons of flammable methane hydrates will melt, convert to a gas and destroy the remaining ozone... and still half the Americans deny global warming is real... it's just too difficult for a man to understand something... when his paycheck depends on not understanding it...

The Blue Miracle Planet... 70% covered by miraculous deep blue water... although the Oceans may seem infinite to our eye's view.... in fact all the water on Earth only makes up a precious 0.02% of the Earth's total mass... yet the Oceans give us over half the oxygen we need to live and breathe... without Our priceless Oceans... we will die...

As Sylvia says so poetically... No Blue... No Green... and she is 100% serious... for millions of generations we have enjoyed the only known living Oceans in the entire universe... and after millions of years on Earth... most humans still wonder where Life came from... and with our newest scientific tools we have determined that beautiful wonder of Nature we call "The Nautilus"... has lived in the Oceans for more than 500 Million years... until now... disappearing due to man-made Ocean Acidification and a few decades of industrial dumping of Billions of tons of highly poisonous chemicals into rivers worldwide... just for corporate / share-holder profit.... ignoring the damage to Life's Foundation... what will Earth's brand new Oceans cost... as if the shareholders could afford to buy one...

If we, supposedly intelligent humans, destroy the source of so much Life in The Universe.... the question is not will we survive... but should we... Can we learn to respect Life in Our Living Oceans before we kill every living creature that has lived a healthy Life for millions of generations... long before we arrived to walk "upright" on land... Are we so egocentric as to destroy our very own Ocean Home... Will we realize our origins are so much more likely Aquatic than we dare to dream... Rocks were formed in fire... and when struck together, give fire... the Oceans Give Life itself... and while we have this Gift... dare we stand Lifeless... allowing the destruction of our Aquatic Life Base... with apathetic heads bowed down... to callous industrial profiteers... who will later tell us... they were the "successful" ones... http://EcoDelMar.org/maya

... when we look at the Oceans.... with our "eye site"... or more accurately... in our "human" interpretation of what we think we "see"... when it comes to something as large as the Oceans... it appears to be infinite... and when we made accurate maps that illustrate about 70% of the Earth is covered with water... our minds appear to have accepted that the Earth is about 70% water... so we called it the Blue Planet... and we thought the Oceans were so big, we could never hurt them... and while it might be a beautiful thought... it lead us to our biggest mistake... we took the Ocean's for granted... if we take all the water on Earth... and compare the mass, it only comes to about .02% of the Earth's weight... and that Pristine, Beautiful, Natural, Holy, Godly, Blessed, Miraculous, Sparkling, Magical, Mystical, Precious... Ocean.... gave birth to the only known Life in the entire Universe... and industrial tycoons use it for their toxic toilet... industrial tycoons don't care at all about dolphins, nor the origins of Life in the Universe... Greenpeace has been fighting against industrial tycoons for decades... and i can't see how anyone can watch the following video, and not hear the drums... http://ecodelmar.org/drums

The Growing Danger of Plastic in the Oceans... Greenpeace is calling for all governments put in place a global network of marine reserves, covering FORTY PERCENT of the world's OCEANS... In addition, marine pollution will only be stopped if all nations take responsibility for their excessive consumption and adopt a "ZERO Waste" to Ocean plan including waste reduction and recycling... http://www.greenpeace.org/usa/en/media-center/news-releases/growing-danger-of-plastic-poll/
